Crews contain brush fire that burned old golf course in Pittsburg

PITTSBURG -- A 55-acre fire in Pittsburg was at 75% containment just after 10 p.m. Sunday, according to Cal Fire.

The blaze began as a structure fire at 2225 John Henry Johnson Pkwy around 5 p.m. but the flames extended to a grassy area that used to be the Delta View Golf Course and a vegetation fire response was launched.

"There was a shed-like structure at the top of the hill that was on fire and then the surrounding grass, which extended to about 50 acres," said Victor Daniel, a fire prevention captain with ConFire. "There is a trail back there. Fortunately, there weren't any folks on the trail when we arrived."

Juan, who lives a few blocks from where firefighters were responding to the flames, said he's lived in his home for the past 12 years and never  experienced a fire like this.

"I went outside and saw a blazing fire," Juan said. "Honestly, I just thought we were going to evacuate because it's pretty dry over there."

Juan and his neighbors didn't have to evacuate, as firefighters were able to contain the fire and stop it from progressing.

"We were worried about ember casts and the wind carrying those embers to (neighborhoods)," Daniel said. "We're right at the very beginning of the fire season. Just this incident alone could've extended to 100 acres."

Crews were expected to remain through the night to mop up hot spots, the Contra Costa Fire Protection District said.

There have been no injuries.
