2 Passengers Hurt When Ferry Boat Crashes Into Dock on S.F. Waterfront

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/BCN/AP) -- A ferry boat crashed into a dock at the San Francisco Ferry Building Friday afternoon, causing two passengers onboard to suffer minor injuries, according to a Golden Gate Ferry spokeswoman.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m. at the terminal along the San Francisco waterfront.

According to Golden Gate Transit District spokeswoman Priya Clemens, the MS San Francisco ferry was sailing from Larkspur and had 53 passengers onboard.

One passenger suffered a back injury but refused treatment. Another passenger was treated at the scene for a bruised hip, Clemens said.

"We're sitting there trying to get up and we crashed a little bit -- everyone is looking around like 'what's happening,'" recalled passenger Noah Bora.

"There were like 15 packs of Pacifico flying off the shelves, coffee machines falling down. It was real hectic," Bora told KPIX.

Although the vessel and dock sustained some damage, the Ferry Building was not damaged. Additionally, the crash didn't result in any delays.

"It's a light travel day so we're not having any service delays or disruptions," Clemens said.

The ferry vessel's crew is being debriefed and will undergo drug and alcohol testing, which Clemens said is standard protocol during such incidents.

While Clemens said the cause of the crash appears to be mechanical, an investigation is underway and could take days.

Tiffany Dennis told the Marin Independent Journal the accident set off panic among a crowd of people dining and shopping on the Embarcadero. The vessel came to a stop when it struck a concrete walkway.
