Fatal Pedestrian Crash Closes I-280 Southbound Lanes In Daly City

DALY CITY (CBS SF) -- A pedestrian fatality and multiple vehicle collisions caused all southbound lanes and two northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 280 in Daly City to be blocked Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian fatality was reported at about 5:30 a.m. and a Sigalert was issued at about 5:45 a.m. for southbound I-280 near the John Daly Boulevard off-ramp, according to the CHP.

"Just after 5:30 a.m., we received a call of a traffic collision involving several vehicles on the Northbound 280 lanes. It appears one of the drivers of the vehicles exited the vehicle and attempted to leave the scene. He was crossing the southbound lanes when he was struck by at least one vehicle that we know of right now," CHP Sgt. Tony Tam said.

The 53-year-old man who was killed was driving a GMC Acadia SUV. The driver of the other vehicle involved, a Honda Civic, in the initial collision was a woman who was not seriously injured.

She was transported to a hospital.

None of the cars that hit the man stopped. However, Tam said the CHP received a call from a driver who later got home and believed that they struck something in the roadway.

It's unknown why the man fled but CHP investigators found a small-caliber rife and a BB gun in the trunk of the man's SUV.

Investigators did not smell alcohol on the victim's remains, and do not suspect he was impaired.

Tam said it was "strange and unusual" for the man to walk around after such a crash. But the case remains a crash investigation, and not a criminal investigation.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and use alternate routes.

No estimated time of reopening the roadway has been announced.
