1 Killed in Head-On DUI Crash on Hwy 1 Near Pescadero
PESCADERO (CBS SF) -- A man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Saturday after his car slammed head-on into another car on Highway 1 in Pescadero, killing the allegedly drunk driver's passenger, the California Highway Patrol said.
Paulino Najera was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, according to the CHP.
Officers got a call around 8:40 p.m. about a multiple-vehicle collision on state Highway 1 south of Bean Hollow Road in Pescadero in unincorporated San Mateo County, the CHP said.
Apparently, police said, Najera was driving a 1998 Ford Contour northbound on Highway 1 while a 2008 Toyota 4Runner was traveling southbound on the same road. The Ford allegedly crossed into the southbound lane, hitting the 4Runner head-on, according to police.
Najera suffered major injuries and was taken to Stanford Medical Center by helicopter. Another person involved in the crash was taken to Stanford Medical Center with major injuries.
The man who was in the right front passenger seat of the Ford succumbed to his injuries on the scene, the CHP said.
