Extra Northbound Golden Gate Bridge Lane Added For Evening Commute
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- There will be an extra northbound lane on the Golden Gate Bridge starting with Tuesday's evening commute, bridge district officials said.
There will be four northbound and two southbound lanes between 4 and 6 p.m., Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District spokeswoman Priya David Clemens said.
"We expect this lane configuration will help better balance traffic congestion across the bridge during these busy hours," Clemens said in a statement.
The district is reconfiguring the lanes based on growing Bay Area traffic, seasonal traffic patterns and the completion of major roadwork on the Presidio Parkway project, Clemens said.
The district will regularly monitor the impact the lane reconfiguration has on southbound traffic and will review its effect in mid-November to see if adjustments are warranted, Clemens said.
There also may be occasional unexpected changes to the lane reconfiguration in the event of emergencies, accidents or unusual traffic conditions. Any deviations will be sent via Twitter from @GGBridgeAlerts, Clemens said.
