Elderly Woman Beaten, Severely Injured In Berkeley Attempted Homicide

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- An elderly woman was severely injured in an attack in Berkeley Friday afternoon, according to police.

Police were called to Russell and Otis streets around 4:30 p.m. after a woman was heard yelling for help in the area.

Arriving officers saw a man matching the description given by callers fleeing the area on foot. They pursued him and were able to detain him on the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Police found a female victim, in her 70s, with severe injuries. She was taken to a hospital for treatment in critical condition.

Police are not yet releasing the identity of the victim or of the suspect detained to protect the ongoing attempted homicide investigation.
