Elderly Woman Beaten After Striking Passenger In Dispute Over Seat On San Francisco Muni Bus

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- An elderly woman is recovering after getting beaten up aboard a San Francisco Muni bus in a dispute with another passenger over a seat at the front of the bus.

San Francisco Police said a 72-year-old woman boarded a bus in the city's Western Addition neighborhood and requested a seat reserved for elderly and disabled passengers.

According to the police report, a woman in her 40s refused to give up the reserved seat and began arguing with the driver over it. The report also said the younger woman then punched the older woman multiple times in the head and chest, knocking her to the floor, police said.

However, police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said a review of the bus surveillance video did not bear out the original police report.

Manfredi told KPIX the video actually shows the elderly woman hitting the other woman first after a 15-minute argument.

The report said the woman also attacked the 63-year-old bus driver as he tried to intervene and she then walked off the bus at the corner of Eddy and Pierce streets.

The elderly woman was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Manfredi says while the victim said she is 72 years old, investigators are unsure whether that is indeed the case. It appears the younger woman could be as much a victim, and police are still sorting out all the facts.

Police were not planning to release the video to the public.
