Elderly Man Killed In Bay Point House Fire
BAY POINT (CBS SF) - A man in his 80s was killed in a house fire in Bay Point Tuesday morning, a fire inspector said.
The one-alarm blaze was reported just after 9 a.m. at a single-story home at 89 Mountain View Ave.
Responding units found smoke coming from the home, and determined that a person was trapped in a bedroom, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Inspector Steve Aubert said.
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken out of the home and given medical treatment but was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene, according to Aubert.
Aubert said the man lived alone and no one else was in the house at the time the fire started.
Investigators believe the blaze started in the living room area.
"It looks like the result of combustible materials on top of a floor furnace," Aubert said.
He added that there weren't many flames when firefighters arrived but that smoke had built up inside the house.
"Smoke was at waist level," he said.
Firefighters didn't find any smoke alarms in the home, he said.
The blaze caused an estimated $20,000 in damage.
