East Bay Congressman Visits Middle-East Capitals As Another American Journalist Is Beheaded
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The growing Islamic terrorist group, ISIS, claimed responsibility Tuesday for the beheading of another American journalist. Meanwhile, East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell is visiting capitals in the Middle East to put together an international alliance to defeat the group.
U.S. Rep. Swalwell of District 15, who's on the Homeland Security committee, is meeting with foreign leaders, including the presidents and prime ministers of Israel, Jordan and Egypt, pressuring them to band together.
"This latest beheading is atrocious, it's brutal, but it will not be the last we hear from ISIL and it will not be the last time that a U.S. citizen is killed by ISIL," Swalwell said in reaction to the beheading of freelance journalist, Steven Sotloff. "I think this has to be a call to action for the Middle-East, for our allies in the region and hopefully this shows the world who they are."
The group's name can be translated from the Arabic as either ISIL or ISIS.
Reports state that the video is similar to that of the beheading footage of another American journalist last month, James Foley.
Swalwell said Americans won't support U.S. troops being sent alone to defeat the rapidly growing organization, but it's critical to keep the group from reaching American soil.
He added the Islamic State will overrun the Middle East if existing nations there don't put aside their differences and work together to stop it.
