Drought Surcharge, Rate Increase Takes Effect For EBMUD Customers
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- East Bay customers will pay more for their water now that a drought surcharge and rate increase has taken effect.
The East Bay Municipal Utility District Board of Directors adopted the new rates last June.
As of July 1, ratepayers will pay more for their water, and see a temporary drought surcharge of up to 25% on their bills.
EBMUD voted for the rate increase to fund ongoing services and investment in infrastructure. The drought surcharge was assessed to pay for extra water supplies, conservation services and enforcement of water use restrictions.
According to EBMUD's estimates, an average household using about 250 gallons a day will see their bill increase by $11.65.
The surcharge will be removed if drought conditions improve.
