DROUGHT: State Regulators Reveal Mandatory Water Cutbacks, Some Bay Area Cities Must Reduce Consumption By 36 Percent
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- State water officials are taking drastic measures to address California's drought and have announced mandatory cuts on water usage which will go into effect this June.
The new targets are in response to Governor Jerry Brown's executive order requiring a 25% cutback in water use across the state.
The new water reduction targets, announced by the State Water Resources Control Board Saturday, range from 8 percent to 36 percent. Communities that don't meet their target could face fines of up to $500 a day.
San Francisco is designated for an 8 percent reduction, but Hillsborough, Discovery Bay, Atherton and Woodside must reduce their water consumption by 36 percent. They join Los Angeles and several Southern California in the highest category of water reduction.
East Bay Municipal Utility District faces a 16% reduction, and San Jose Water Company is slated for a 20 percent.
The board is expected to vote on the new cuts the first week of May.
