Drought Blamed For Mount Shasta Mudslide, Flooding From Melting Glacier
MOUNT SHASTA (CBS SF) -- California's drought is being blamed for glacial melt that caused mudslides and flooding in the Mount Shasta area.
At least two creeks were flooded in the canyon below the glacier on Mount Shasta, blocking small roads and bridges in the area.
"We need to clear the material off the bridge here, but we also have to figure out how to unplug the channel which has become completely choked with debris upstream," U.S. Forest Service Hydrologist Steve Bachman said.
Rangers believe the glacier was left exposed to the sun due to the drought, causing it to melt.
The mudslide was the largest on Mt. Shasta in twenty years.
