MILL VALLEY (CBS SF) -- A male driver died after flipping the car he was driving on northbound U.S. Highway 101 in Mill Valley early Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident was reported at about 4:30 a.m. on Highway 101 between the Seminary Drive off ramp and state Highway 131, CHP officials said.
CHP officers responded to the crash and found a silver Chrysler 200 sedan that had struck the wood and steel guardrail, overturned and landed on its roof.
Approximately 75 feet of guardrail and 10 wooden posts were destroyed in the accident, according to the CHP.
Debris was spread across the roadway and a light pole was also taken out during the accident, causing significant lane closures this morning, CHP officials said.
The male driver was wearing a seatbelt when he was found, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, the CHP said.
As of 6:45 a.m., CHP officials remained on scene investigating the crash and the California Department of Transportation was on scene removing damaged guardrail and other debris from the roadway.
The CHP said the far right lane of northbound Highway 101 is expected to remain closed for repairs until about noon today.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
