Driver Dies, CHP Officer Hurt in Crash on Hwy 101 in Sausalito

SAUSALITO (CBS SF) -- A driver was killed and a California Highway Patrol officer narrowly escaped serious injury in a crash Saturday morning on Highway 101 in Marin County, authorities said.

The collision happened about 8 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near the Spencer Avenue off-ramp. A pair of CHP officers had stopped to help an SUV driver whose vehicle had spun out and was blocking the slow lane of the freeway, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

While they were assisting him, they heard the sound of a skidding car and turned to see a Toyota Corolla spinning out of control heading directly for their CHP patrol SUV.

One of the officers was standing next to the patrol vehicle and had just enough time to jump into the back seat before the Toyota slammed into it, Barclay said.

"Had he not jumped into the patrol vehicle he might have been killed," Barclay said.

The Toyota's driver, a woman, was extricated from the car by Southern Marin Fire District crews. She was taken Marin General Hospital, where she died from her injuries, Barclay said.

The CHP officer had moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital, Barclay said. The other officer was not hurt.

The driver of the disabled SUV that had brought the officers to the scene was not injured.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the crash. All lanes were cleared about 12:30 p.m.
