Driver Arrested After Suspected DUI Collision Kills Cyclist In San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A San Jose man was arrested for a suspected DUI crash that killed a bicyclist Thursday night in San Jose, police said Friday.

The crash was reported at 9:41 p.m. at Auzerais Avenue and Drake Street.

A preliminary investigation showed that the driver of a white 2005 Dodge was driving west on Auzerais Avenue when allegedly he drifted to the right into a bike lane, clipped a parked van and hit the cyclist.

The cyclist, a man whose name hasn't yet been released, died at the scene.

He is the 34th person to die this year in San Jose in a traffic collision, police said.

His death marks the fifth time this year that a bicyclist has been killed in the city. That's the same number of fatal bike collisions during all of last year.

Several cyclists we spoke to say they no longer feel safe.

Daniel Walker, a San Jose bike commuter said, "Bikes are small and not easily noticed, but some of it can be on the cyclists because some of them don't follow the rules of the road."

The city is adding bike lanes to accommodate an increase in cyclists. A total of 26 new miles of bike lanes have been added this year.

The driver of the Dodge, 26-year-old Taylor Hildreth, stayed at the scene and then was booked into county jail on suspicion of felony DUI.

Anyone with information about the collision is being asked to call Detective Kelvin Pham of the San Jose Police Department's traffic investigations unit at (408) 277-4654.
