Driver Sought After Dog Brutally Thrown From Car On Highway 101
PETALUMA (CBS SF) -- A Bay Area dog was recovering from broken bones and road rash Wednesday evening after apparently being thrown from a moving car on Highway 101 in the North Bay, according to authorities.
A couple of passersby found the emaciated female pit bull mix in the bushes on the side of the road Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities say the dog was tossed near the East Washington Street off-ramp. Someone on Facebook posted they saw the dog get hit by a big-rig.
Her caretakers at Petaluma Animal Services have dubbed her Martha. They described her as their "sweet freeway girl" because of her friendly demeanor.
Jeff Charter, the executive director with Petaluma Animal Services, was the one who picked Martha up after she was found off northbound 101.
"A broken leg, a broken pelvis and one of her canine teeth is fractured," said Charter. "She's very underweight and undernourished."
It's still a mystery how she got there. Charter said it is possible Martha either jumped or was thrown from a car.
"One of the thing you worry about dogs that are in pain how they're going to react if you are going to hurt them, but she let me put my arms underneath her and pick her up with a broken leg and a broken pelvis and didn't even so much as whimper," said Charter of the rescue.
No one has come to claim her yet.
Charter said Martha didn't have an id tag or a microchip, but she does have a lot of offers for new homes.
The shelter's Facebook page is full of them.
"She's safe. She's happy," said Charter. "She's getting all the care she needs and we are going to take care of her."
