1 Dead After Fiery Crash On I-80 Near Berkeley Shuts Down Lanes

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- One person has died and multiple lanes of westbound Interstate Highway 80 in Berkeley were blocked following a fiery traffic collision early Wednesday morning.

The collision was first reported at 5:22 a.m. just east of Gilman Street after a vehicle lost control and spun out, colliding with the concrete driver, the CHP said. Multiple vehicles were involved. A Good Samaritan in another vehicle stopped behind the first one and called 911 for help.

Shortly after, a third vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, lost control and spun out across the lanes and a fourth vehicle was unable to avoid hitting the Corolla.

The Corolla sustained major damage and was engulfed in flames; the driver was killed as a result of the collision.

All lanes were initially blocked around 6 a.m. and traffic was being guided through the slow lane at around 6:14 a.m. All lanes were reopened shortly before 8 a.m., the CHP said.
