Dead Humpback Whale Washes Onto Pacifica Beach

PACIFICA (CBS SF) -- A dead Humpback whale washed onto the shore on a beach in Pacifica Sunday, according to dispatchers.

The large, deceased whale was found sometime Sunday morning in the surf in the 400 block of Esplanade Drive on a stretch of beach referred to as Pacific Manor Beach.

Further details about the whale and its cause of death were not immediately available.

Personnel from California Academy of Sciences and the Marine Mammal Center will keep an eye on the carcass and the tides to determine whether they can safely perform a necropsy.

Numerous dead whales have washed onto California's beaches this year.
