Daycare Children Among Evacuated From San Francisco SoMa Gas Line Rupture
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A number of evacuations and street closures were ordered briefly Tuesday morning following a gas line rupture in San Francisco's South of Market area, authorities said.
The leak was reported at 147 South Park Avenue, which borders South Park, a neighborhood park bordered by 2nd, 3rd, Bryant and Brannan streets near AT&T Park. Cars were being diverted from the area, according to police.
Next door at 155 South Park, chef-owner of The Butler & the Chef Bistro, Joel Martin, told KCBS they're in the process of building a new restaurant at the adjacent building and just after 9 a.m., someone on the crew busted one of the main gas lines. Martin said it sounded like the flow of water, but actually it was natural gas.
Jason King of PG&E says a 3rd party construction crew struck a 1 inch plastic service line. PG&E arrived at 9:32 a.m. and the line was capped by 9:50 a.m. It was not clear how long it would take to fully restore service in the area.
Police indicated there is a daycare on top of one of the buildings in the area of the gas line rupture and children were reportedly evacuated. Streets had re-opened in the area by 10:00 a.m.
