Daily Madden: Will Harvin Play Against 49ers?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Seahawks star receiver Percy Harvin, just back from hip surgery, was knocked out of Saturday's game against the Saints with a concussion.

"Now he'll be going through the protocol," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "He has the extra day because they played on Saturday, so he has until Sunday to get through it."

Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he won't know Harvin's status for the NFC Championship game against the 49ers until Wednesday or Thursday.

"It's a big difference for the 49ers in playing defense," Madden said. "You have to defend Seattle differently with Percy Harvin in there. To be honest, they're a heck of a lot easier to defend without him."

The NFL has changed the format for the Pro Bowl. Instead of AFC stars facing NFC stars, players will be selected in a televised draft, with Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice serving as captains.

"It's some suit's idea of really spicing it up instead of just making it a better game," Madden said. "They're going for the gimmicks, and they've gone for the gimmicks so far now that it's just becoming a gimmick game. Now I'll admit that playing a football all-star game is hard, and you can't compare it to basketball or baseball because it's easier for them to play an all star game. But having said that, the Pro Bowl and what it is and what it used to be has really changed and really slipped. It's gone through being a joke to being an embarrassment now." (7:10)
