Daily Madden: Why Tony La Russa Missed Coaching
Former Cardinals and A's manager Tony La Russa has been named 'Chief Baseball Officer' by the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks.
"I texted Tony and I got an interesting response," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "He texted back and said 'It feels great to get nervous again.' I understand that. People say how do you compare announcing to coaching. And there's no comparison. I mean in announcing you don't win or lose... That's what Tony is talking about."
Since retiring from managing in 2011, La Russa had been working in Major League Baseball's baseball operations office.
"When he was in the league office -- all these games, thirty teams playing -- and whatever happened, Tony didn't have any say in it," John said. "He didn't win or lose. So now he has the Diamondbacks and they have to win. And if they don't he'll get nervous." (7:50)
