Daily Madden: What's Behind The NFL Coaching Carousel?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Over the last two NFL seasons, 15 head coaches have lost their jobs.

"Half the coaches in the NFL have been fired," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "You can see why coaches go through what they go through. Why do they sleep on couches at night, and why do they work 18-20 hours day; and why do they complain about officiating; and why do they do a lot of things? Because it's a tenuous position they're in."

Madden said there is little patience among NFL owners these days.

"That fine line between winning and losing is a lot of times determined by little things," Madden said. "We expect new coaches to come in and completely turn things around, and we expect new players, rookies, to come in and not only start, but be stars. And that's really not very practical."

Madden said NFL owners are a unique group.

"Who buys teams? Guys who buy teams usually if you put them in a room they have pretty big egos... Your ego maybe gets you in, and then your competitiveness makes you want to win, and then patience isn't a virtue." (7:00)
