Daily Madden: We've Waited Too Long For The NFL Draft
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It's the second week of May, and the NFL Draft is finally about to take place.
"I really don't like it. I don't think it's a good thing," John Madden said of the unusually late date. The first round begins at 5 pm Thursday, two weeks later than in previous years.
"It's kind of unfair to the rookies," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "You've gone through two phases of getting ready for the next season -- you know developing and preparing your team -- and you don't have your rookies yet... I just don't think it's fair to the coaches and rookies."
Madden said a quarterback might not be one of the first players chosen Thursday night.
"The only way you take a quarterback is if there's a quarterback worthy (of a top pick)," John said. "It's real easy when there's a Peyton Manning there. I mean that's the way you're going to go. It's real easy when there's an Andrew Luck there. You know he's the guy. But I don't think this year in the quarterback class there is 'a guy.'" (6:20)
