Daily Madden: There's Nothing Like The Masters
SAN FRANCISCO (KBCS) - The first of professional golf's four major tournaments, The Masters, got underway in Augusta Thursday.
"It really is something special," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It's Augusta, and the fans are 'patrons' and all that stuff. You kind of want to say it's a bunch of baloney -- you know too much of this. But when you watch it, it really does kind of capture you -- what it means and the reverence that goes with it. Even when you're talking to yourself when you're watching the Masters, you talk a little lower."
Veteran Fred Couples was playing well at the start.
"It's good to see some of these old names on the leader board," Madden said. "Maybe people who follow it do know all the names. But it seems like that the more golf you watch, the fewer guys you know. Or maybe you were just more interested at one time and you kind of knew every golfer. And now you see guys that are up there that you never even heard of." (6:15)
