Daily Madden: Stanford Out-Muscled, Not Out-Coached
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Michigan State's defense held Stanford to a field goal after half-time, winning the Rose Bowl 24-20 in Pasadena Wednesday.
"In the second half, Michigan State comes out and wins that game," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"They kind of stopped the run. Stanford had trouble running. (Michigan State) did what they had to (and) they made good adjustments... (Stanford running back Tyler) Gaffney has made a lot of yardage for them and a lot of touchdowns, and they tried to run it in there, and Michigan State had no part of it."
As expected, the Stanford loss came with some fan criticism of the play calling in the second half. "That just kind of goes with losing," Madden said. "(Stanford is) a tough, aggressive, running team. That's what they were doing... Unless you say it beforehand -- you know, don't just run in there, you know bootleg or fake it or throw a slant or something -- I don't that you can say it after you find out it didn't work." (7:15)
