Daily Madden: Out Of The Playoffs, The 49ers Still Make News

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Ray McDonald was released by the 49ers Wednesday following another allegation of sexual assault against the defensive lineman.

"At some point you just say 'no more,'" John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew, noting McDonald's previous brushes with the law. "I think with Ray McDonald they probably got pretty far down the road."

Madden said any new player conduct guidelines from the league won't prevent teams from making their own decisions on discipline.

"The league develops a set of standards (and) that would be the minimum," Madden said. "Then the club could still do whatever they want to do on top of that."

Meanwhile, the NFL Network reported that the University of Michigan has offered 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh a six-year $48 million contract, which would make him the highest-paid college coach in the nation.

"It seems a little premature," Madden said. The offer comes amid wide-spread speculation that the 49ers and Harbaugh will part ways after the season ends. "I'm not sure what the rules are and how you have to do things, but to come and offer a guy who has a job and is not finished with it, I'm not sure how that works. He still has another year on his contract and he still has a contract with the 49ers and they still have a couple games. I don't know how they can be offering jobs, and I don't who is listening on the other end. Maybe it's an agent deal or something like that. But something about it doesn't sound right." (6:40)
