Daily Madden: Kaepernick Runs Away With Victory

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Quarterback Colin Kaepernick scrambled for a first down on third and eight to help set up a game-winning field goal as the 49ers defeated the Packers 23-20 in Green Bay Sunday.

"Superb," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning. "That's what a great player is. Some guys just make plays when you don't need them. Some guys make plays when you really need them. And that is what Kaepernick did. He not only made those plays, but he made those plays when his team needed him to win."

Kaepernick ran for 98 yards and threw for 227. Madden said another 49er should get more credit for the wild-card playoff victory.

"I heard someone after the game (say) 'Frank Gore didn't have a big game, he just gained 66 yards.' I thought 'what the heck are you watching?' He scored a touchdown, he's catching passes, he blocks, he's a tough guy. That big run by Kaepernick? Frank Gore made the block that sprung him."

Madden said both teams deserve praise for quality performances.

"We talked all week about the weather," Madden said. "Then when the game goes, you don't think it affects them? Of course it does. It was like none degrees... Under those conditions, I think both teams played very, very, very well." (7:05)
