Daily Madden: Kaepernick Goes Back To School

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Coming off a disappointing season and about to meet a new coach, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will work with former NFL QB Kurt Warner and quarterback tutor Dennis Gile during the off-season.

"It's happening more and more today because of the collective bargaining agreement," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "The coaches of the club can't work with the players basically for three months. If the quarterback or any other player wants to work on football or techniques or any of those things, they have to go off campus to do it. So the collective bargaining agreement encourages that.... As this happens, there is more and more of what you call gurus popping up. Gurus all over the place."

Madden said it's a practice that can be overdone.

"Remember when (Tim) Tebow came out he had everyone working with him. And I thought this is really going to foul him up. Because as a quarterback, when you get to that stage in your career, you kind of know who you are fundamentally. And you just change a little here and a little thing there and you tweak things. And I thought that people tried to change Tebow too much. I'd watch him go with this guy, with that guy, with another guy, and I thought they're going to really foul this guy up."

A Heisman Trophy winner and first round pick out of Florida, Tebow played three seasons in the NFL before being cut by the Patriots in 2013. (7:20)
