Daily Madden: Colin Kaepernick's Six-Year Extension With The 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The record-setting $126 million deal announced Wednesday that keeps Colin Kaepernick with the San Francisco 49ers through the 2020 season avoids any uncertainty about keeping the quarterback as a free agent as his rookie contract entered its final year.
"If you have a talent like Colin Kaepernick, you want to tie him up for as long as you can," Coach Madden told the KCBS morning team.
"What the 49ers did was smart, and it looked like they did it in a way where they can take care of Kaepernick, which they had to do, and then still have some cap money to take care of the other players."
The 49ers still have money on the table to lock in other valuable players, Madden said, avoiding a mistake many teams have made over the years that essentially devalues the quarterback.
"Some teams give everything to the quarterback, then don't have any money for other players," he said.
