Daily Madden: Can Matt Schaub Fill The Raiders QB Hole?
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The Oakland Raiders have reportedly signed quarterback Matt Schaub in a trade with the Houston Texans. "(The Raiders) have to see if he's really done and there's no more gas in the tank, or if a change of scenery will bring him back to the old Matt Schaub," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
Schaub led the Texans to a 12-4 record in 2012, but he and the Texans struggled last year. He was booed and benched. "It's worth a look," Madden said. "Sometimes you know someone, you know what they were, and you can see what happened to them, and you just want to judge for yourself."
Would Schaub's signing mean the Raiders wouldn't pick a quarterback in the draft? "They can still do both," Madden said. "If you get Matt Schaub, and if you had thoughts of taking a quarterback in the draft, I think you still take the quarterback in the draft... You may not take him with your first pick, but I think you have to get quarterbacks... I don't think Matt Schaub is the answer for the future, so they still have to address that even if they were to get him."
Schaub is 32. "If he's the Matt Schaub of two or three years ago, he would be the starter. If he's the Matt Schaub of last year, you probably end up cutting him."
