Daily Madden: Are The 49ers Ready To Give Up On Aldon Smith?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The 49ers are facing a May 3 deadline to pick up a 2015 fifth year contract option on star linebacker Aldon Smith. The San Jose Mercury News and ESPN report the 49ers most likely won't make that commitment.

"I'm not sure what not picking up the option really means," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "I don't know how it affects the 2014 season -- if he has no discipline -- and how it affects (things) from there going on."

An allegedly belligerent Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport Sunday on charges of making a false bomb report. It was his fourth arrest in two and a half years with the team. "There's a lot that has to be sorted through on this," Madden said.

The week before the May 3 option deadline, Smith is scheduled to be in Santa Clara County Superior court for a hearing related to DUI and gun possession charges.

"I think this is one of those things that you'd like to just be able to kind of take your time and let everything play out and see exactly where you are," Madden said. "But when you have dates and options and so on, you have to go with that date."
