Fire Crews Contain 15-Acre Vegetation Fire In Discovery Bay; Fireworks Suspected
DISCOVERY BAY (CBS SF) -- Fire crews in Contra Costa County have contained a brush fire in Discovery Bay that grew to approximately 15 acres Wednesday evening.
The fire, which was referred to as the Headwater Fire, broke out in an area east of 6673 Yellowstone Circle in Discovery Bay around 6:30 p.m.
"It was on my way home and I could see the smoke. And by the time I got home, it was coming across the fields," said Rodney Smith, a nearby homeowner. "So I stood out here on the levee just to keep an eye out in case it jumped."
A photo from PG&E cameras showed a large plume of smoke rising from the area of the fire.
The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District sent units to the scene. Shortly before 7 p.m., the Cal Fire SCU Twitter account posted that it was assisting on the fire.
The fire was contained just before sunset.
A fire district spokesperson told KPIX 5 that while the cause is under investigation, evidence of fireworks was found in the area. An eyewitness told an investigator that they saw four or five juveniles who were fleeing the scene.
Fire crews remained on the scene late Wednesday night to mop up. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage to structures.
