Update: All westbound lanes of I-580 in Oakland reopen after road-rage crash, shooting
OAKLAND -- A crash and shooting later linked to a road rage incident on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland temporarily closed all westbound lanes Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. on westbound Interstate 580, east of Keller Avenue and near the Oakland Zoo. CHP spokesperson Ofc. Andrew Barclay said Thursday night that a CHP officer was traveling on eastbound Interstate 580 when the officer noticed what was the aftermath of the collision on the other side of the freeway.
The officer exited the freeway to get to the westbound lanes. The collision was between a white Ford Escape and a silver Dodge Ram which was towing another vehicle.
One of the drivers suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Barclay said CHP investigators are looking at the likelihood of a road rage incident between the two drivers prior to the collision.
One of the drivers used a firearm to shoot one round at the other vehicle. No one was hurt by the gunshot. Investigators are trying to determine who fired the shot.
A CHP K-9 officer was brought to the scene to locate the firearm, which was found on the ground near the collision.
Both drivers were detained at the scene for questioning as part of the investigation. There were no passengers inside either of the vehicles.
The CHP continues to investigate the incident.
The two left lanes were reopened at around 3:45 p.m. and authorities said all lanes were reopened at about 6 p.m.
