Coroner ID's Victim In Early Morning Crash On I-780
BENICIA (CBS SF) -- A driver killed in a two-car crash on Interstate Highway 780 in Benicia early Saturday morning has been identified as a 29-year-old Vallejo man, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Eric Deleon Sopang was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash around 12:40 a.m. on westbound Highway 780 just west of the Interstate Highway 680 connector, according to the CHP.
A 29-year-old woman from Vallejo riding in the passenger seat of Sopang's car suffered a broken arm in the crash, and a third passenger was unharmed, the CHP is reporting.
CHP officials say Sopang was driving a Toyota Camry at about 65 mph when he lost control of the car and veered into a guardrail, which sent him spinning into the path of a Kia Rio heading west.
The driver of the Kia, a 30-year-old Vallejo woman, was uninjured in the crash.
Investigators were looking into the possibility that the man may have suffered a medical condition while driving causing him to lose control of the car, the CHP said. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The connecter between I-680 and I-780 was closed in both directions until shortly after 3 a.m., disrupting traffic coming to and from the Benicia-Martinez Bridge.
