Raised Drawbridge, River Plunge Ends CHP Chase In Discovery Bay

DISCOVERY BAY (CBS SF) –  A California Highway Patrol pursuit in eastern Contra Costa County came to an end Wednesday when the suspect bailed out of his vehicle and jumped into a river before being arrested.

The chase began in South Sacramento as officers from the area CHP office tried to stop the suspect vehicle, which instead took off.

Thr CHP said patrol officers and air units pursued the suspect on southbound Interstate Highway 5 to state Highway 4. Just east of Discovery Bay, the Old River drawbridge at Highway 4 was apparently up and left the suspect nowhere to go - leading the suspect to get out of the car and jump into the Old River  to escape.

The man was quickly spotted in the water and was taken into custody.

The CHP Golden Gate Division told KPIX 5 that traffic was temporarily stopped at Highway 4 and Old River Bridge during the incident. Traffic appeared to be crossing the Old River Bridge just prior to the man being taken into custody by officers.

There was no immediate information on what prompted the chase or why the suspect was being pulled over.
