CHP Chases Carjacking Suspects Over Bay Bridge Into San Francisco; 2 Arrested After Crash

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF)-- Two Oakland carjacking suspects were arrested Monday morning after the California Highway Patrol chased them over the Bay Bridge and into San Francisco city streets, where their car smashed into several others, a CHP spokesman said.

KCBS' Doug Sovern reported when he arrived at the scene that CHP said the vehicle was stolen in Stockton and is now totaled after the suspect vehicle side-swiped several others, including when it was driving along the Bay Bridge during the pursuit. Fortunately, no one was injured in the chase.

Oakland police were trying to stop the suspects in a Chevrolet Impala and requested CHP assistance on Interstate Highway 580 near Lakeshore Avenue at about 10:40 a.m., Oakland-area CHP spokesman Sean Wilkenfeld said.

The driver continued onto Interstate Highway 80 to the Bay Bridge, where he went through the toll plaza with CHP officers following behind him.

The driver fled from the officers over the Bay Bridge and onto San Francisco city streets, Wilkenfeld said. The pursuit ended near Market and Gough streets, where two people were detained and taken into custody.

Sovern reported CHP was able to nab the suspects by foot after they tried to flee from their vehicle.

Plenty of debris remained at the scene along with heavy police presence as well as traffic closures. In all, two vehicles were totaled in the chase.
