The elderly male drive was taken away in an ambulance shortly before 8 a.m. for treatment related to diabetes. The car, a red four-door Toyota, remained in the water about 20 feet off of the Candlestick Point exit, creating a visual distraction for drivers.

The crash was first reported at 6:42 a.m., CHP Officer Eric Anderson said.

The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of his condition but was not otherwise injured.

A tow truck responded to the scene and the vehicle was pulled from the water just before 8:30 a.m., Anderson said.
