Caltrans Finds More Corrosion Problems In Bay Bridge Tunnel
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- There could be bigger problems when it comes to corrosion in the Bay Bridge tunnel after Caltrans discovered a dozen spots in the tunnel where concrete is in danger of breaking away from the wall.
The tunnel that goes through Yerba Buena Island is what Caltrans is focusing on ever since a car was hit by falling concrete back on January 30th.
Since then, Caltrans has realized the tunnel has more issues than they originally thought, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. The problem areas range in size from a few inches to a few feet and are on both sides of the tunnel.
John Goodwin of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission says this is to be expected when you're talking about an 80 year old structure.
"I don't think drivers should be scared or concerned, but should be aware," said Goodwin. "This infrastructure is from our grandparents and parents' day. I think it's our responsibility to take care of it."
Caltrans has said the corrosion is "minor, but important." If Caltrans' investigation finds that this is a more urgent matter, the MTC will release toll funds to make the necessary repairs.
Caltrans officials said rainwater is to blame for the corrosion. The water is leaking from the more than 250 drain openings on the upper deck down to the tunnel.
