Caltrain Resumes Service Following Fatality On Tracks In Atherton

ATHERTON (CBS SF) -- Caltrain has resumed service after a man who appeared to have stepped on to the tracks intentionally was killed by a train in Atherton on Thursday night, according to a Caltrain spokeswoman.

Southbound Caltrain No. 192, which left San Francisco at 8:40 p.m. and left Redwood City at 9:28 p.m., struck the man on the train tracks at Watkins Avenue around 9:45 p.m., according to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.

The 481 passengers in addition to crewmembers aboard the train were not injured, Dunn said.

The train was moved to the Menlo Park station where the passengers were able to exit the involved train and board another train to their southbound destinations, Dunn said.

Trains do not stop in Atherton on weekdays. Northbound Caltrain No. 197 was held at the Menlo Park station and  could not continue its route due to the fatality, according to Dunn.

SamTrans buses were carrying passengers between Menlo Park and Redwood City stations during the delay.

The northbound tracks were opened shortly after midnight today and trains were traveling at reduced speeds, she said.

Caltrain was operating on an hourly schedule on Thursday night, and the last train of the day left San Francisco shortly before 12:45 a.m. today.

The incident marks the fifth fatality on Caltrain tracks so far this year, Dunn said.
