California Passes Proposition 57 In Support Of Sentencing Reforms For Nonviolent Offenders

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- Voters in California approved Proposition 57, the ballot measure to reform sentencing and parole for nonviolent offenders.

Prop 57 allows judges to decide whether to try adults in court instead of prosecutors.

Passage means that thousands of nonviolent state felons can seek early release. Inmates can earn credit for good behavior.

Early returns indicated 64 percent of voters supported the measure.
