California Expands Hands-Free Cellphone Law
SACRAMENTO (KPIX 5) – Looking to curb distracted driving in California, Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that expands restrictions on cellphone use behind the wheel.
Brown signed AB1785, which prohibits drivers from checking maps, adjusting playlists, taking photos or live streaming on their phones unless a hands-free device is used. The new restrictions add to existing bans on calling or texting without a hands-free device.
The new law allows for drivers to swipe on their devices, if their phone is attached to a dashboard or windshield mount.
AB1785 attempts to address advancements in technology since the original hands-free law was enacted a decade ago.
The new law goes into effect in January. Violators will be subject to a $20 fine for the first offense, with fines going up for additional offenses.
