California Group Files Initiative To Limit Which Bathrooms Transgender People Can Use
SACRAMENTO (KCBS)-- Another attempt is underway to repeal a controversial law that allows transgender students in California schools to choose which restrooms they use.
The initiative filed with the California attorney general's office would require people to use restrooms in government buildings serving their biological gender.
A 2013 state law requires public schools to allow transgender students access to restrooms and locker rooms of their choosing. California was the first state to enshrine rights for transgender K-12 students.
Opponents of the law call it an invasion of privacy. They need 365,880 signatures to qualify the initiative for the 2016 ballot. An effort to place an initiative on the ballot in 2014 failed to gain enough signatures.
