Structures Burn In East San Jose Foothills Brush Fire
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Two homes were destroyed and a dog died Monday in a fast-moving brush fire that burned nearly 50 acres in the foothills of East San Jose, according to fire officials.
The fire was reported at 11:03 a.m. in the 3000 block of Aborn Road near the intersection of Aborn and Gurdwara Ave. The location is in the Evergreen neighborhood, west of Joseph D. Grant County Park.
The fire had reached a fourth alarm as of 11:50 a.m. and several structures were consumed by flames. Many homes were in the area of the fire. Smoke from the fire was visible miles away.
Forward progress was stopped at about 12:30 p.m. Cal Fire said approximately 47 acres burned.
People living near the fire were asked to shelter in place and at least one VTA route, 39, was rerouted during the fire.
KPIX was later able to confirm that among the structures destroyed in the fire were an in-law cottage towards the back of a property at at 4426 Lazy Lane.
KPIX spoke with Mimi Nguyen, a young woman who lived in the cottage. While she was not home during the fire and was uninjured, she said she lost her dog Bubbi in the fire. Her aunt called her and alerted her of the fire.
She said she adopted the dog from animal service and that Bubbi had been rescued during Hurricane Harvey and brought to the Bay Area.
A mobile home was also destroyed. Firefighters said they didn't know who lives in the mobile home.
