Big Step Forward For Bike, Pedestrian Path Linking Sonoma & Marin Counties

NOVATO (KCBS) -- A planned 36-mile-long bicycle and pedestrian pathway linking Sonoma and Marin counties took a giant step forward Thursday.

The path will eventually run between the Sonoma County Airport, and Larkspur, and will run parallel in many parts to the SMART rail tracks.

Construction had been delayed indefinitely when sales tax that funds the SMART project dipped during the great recession. Environmental approvals also were needed before construction could begin.

"The approval is really a culmination of hard work and collaboration over the past three years with Caltrans, and several federal agencies," Jeanne Mariani-Belding with SMART said.

Those environmental approvals for the project are done, and now officials have to find the money.

Bicyclist Simon Bacich from Petaluma is excited for the project.

"I think it's great. I mean, a lot of people bike in this area," he said.
