Eastbound Lanes Of Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Reopen

SAN RAFAEL (CBS SF) -- All eastbound lanes of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge were reopened to traffic after crews cleaned up the wreckage of a big-rig fire Tuesday.

The big rig erupted into flames during the morning commute Tuesday, snarling traffic on the bridge during the morning commute.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a big rig crashed into a guardrail on the bridge heading from San Rafael to the East Bay around 8 a.m. A short time later, it erupted into flames, sending billowing smoke on the lower deck.

CHP spokesman Officer Andrew Barclay said that no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

San Rafael fire crews raced to the scene and extinguished the blaze, but not before the cab of the truck was reduced to a pile of smoldering metal.

All the traffic had been led off the bridge while crews cleaned up the wreck, which included a diesel fuel spill.

"It's a lot to deal with," Barclay said.

The big-rig was hauling 24 tons of contaminated soil from a Marin County construction site which forced a lengthy cleanup, Barclay said.
