Big-Rig Carrying Diesel Crashes On I-238 In Castro Valley, Causes Major Delays
CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) – Two lanes reopened late Friday morning on northbound Interstate Highway 238, more than six hours after a big-rig collision and fuel spill blocked the freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.
The first and second lanes were opened, but the number 3 lane was still closed as of 11 a.m., the CHP said. There's no estimated time for reopening the third lane.
No injuries were reported in the crash.
About 35 gallons of fuel were spilled after the wreck, which occurred about 3:45 a.m. on I-238 north of eastbound Interstate Highway 580.
The fuel that leaked from the truck's gas tank was contained and boomed off so it wouldn't enter nearby waterways, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which responded to the scene.
Due to the blocked lanes, trucks are being allowed to use I-580, the CHP said.
