Suspect Arrested For Allegedly Stabbing Berkeley School Principal
BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- Police have arrested a 20-year-old man accused of stabbing a Berkeley school principal Tuesday afternoon before fleeing the scene, authorities said.
At 1:46 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stabbing at Via Center, a private special education school located at 2126 Sixth St.
Berkeley police found the principal with stab wounds. The unnamed principal was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigators said the suspect was 20-year-old Angel Juarez, a student at the school who was described as a Hispanic adult male with brown hair and brown eyes, approximately 5 feet tall and weighing about 100 lbs.
Juarez was last seen wearing a long sleeve burgundy shirt, black sneakers, black pants, and carrying a large knife.
He was seen running westbound on University Avenue over the Highway 80 overpass. Police searched the Marina, Aquatic Park and areas of west Berkeley.
Juarez was eventually spotted by the California Highway Patrol near Buchanan Street and Interstate Highway 880 in Albany, police said.
After witnesses positively identified Juarez as the stabbing suspect, police booked him into the Berkeley jail.
Because Juarez was allegedly carrying a large knife and was considered dangerous, police had asked residents in the area to shelter in place. The shelter in place advisory has since been lifted, police said.
