Berkeley Fire Badly Damages Apartment Building

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- Firefighters worked to extinguish a two-alarm fire that badly damaged an apartment building in Berkeley Sunday evening, a fire dispatcher said.

The first report of the fire came in at 5:28 p.m. at 2449 Dwight Way, the dispatcher said.

Richard Nelson lives in the apartment underneath the one that caught fire.  He says he is lucky to have escaped with his life.

"It sounded like an explosion," Nelson said.

Part of the roof collapsed during the fire, but no injuries were reported.
