A police shooting in Berkeley early Monday morning left one person dead, authorities said.

Berkeley police said they were called to the area of Grayson and 7th streets around 5:26 a.m. for an auto burglary in progress. When they arrived, they spotted several suspects at the scene, and an officer was able to detain one of them.

Two other suspects were seen trying to drive away, but the driver crashed into a patrol car and was headed toward the officer and detained suspect.

Police then shot at the vehicle and struck the driver. He later died at the hospital. 

Officers arrested a 37-year-old Novato man and a 30-year-old Oakland woman on suspicion of robbery. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the Coroner's Office were investigating the shooting along with police, Perry said.

It was not immediately known how many officers were involved in the shooting.
