Update: I-780 lanes in Benicia reopen after asphalt tanker truck overturns

Tanker truck spill closes westbound Interstate 780 in Benicia

BENICIA – Lanes of westbound Interstate Highway 780 in Benicia reopened late Wednesday hours after a tanker truck overturned just west of the Second Street off-ramp, spilling approximately 6,000 gallons of hot asphalt.

The California Highway Patrol said no one was hurt in the crash, which happened just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The tanker ended up leaking across all the lanes of westbound I-780 and on the right embankment of the freeway and into a ditch.

Environmental regulators were called to assess whether any of the asphalt reached local waterways. At least one resident asked authorities if the substance hit her fence.

Westbound traffic was diverted at East Fifth Street.

All westbound lanes of the highway opened again at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrans District 4 said on social media.
